Three Tips for Communicating with Your Child’s Daycare Teachers

Here at The Breakie Bunch Learning Center, we have the honor of caring for your children each day, but more than that, we feel like they (and you!) are an extension of our childcare family. And as such, we want you to remember that we are here to support your family through whatever journey you’re going through. We know that everything that happens at home has an impact on your child’s behavior. Knowing these struggles and successes will also help us better support your child’s needs.

Three tips for parents and caregivers:

  1. Get to know your child’s daycare teacher
  2. Be open about what’s going on in your life
  3. Use technology as a resource

  1. Get to Know Your Child’s Daycare Teacher

In general, people find it much easier to open up to others that they’ve formed a relationship. As your child’s daycare teacher or preschool teacher, we strive to have that kind of relationship with you anyway, and we know that since your child spends so much time with us each week, you want that too! After all, we’re a team—you are your child’s teacher when they aren’t with us, so we want to make sure that we’re able to get to know you better, as well. We love hearing about your lives and exciting things happening in your home, so please share with us when you see us!

  1. Be Open About What’s Going on In Your Life

Opening up about personal struggles within your family might seem uncomfortable, and often you may feel they shouldn’t have an impact on your child’s day at their childcare center, but they do! In general, we know that young children are like sponges, picking up on anxiety, stress, and other emotions from everyone around them. So, if you’re going through a stressful time at home, let us know about it! We’re here to help, and as your child’s preschool teacher, we would be happy to share an extra dose of love with your child when they need it. A few common scenarios that could affect your toddler are:

  • Divorce
  • A death in the family
  • Potty training
  • A new sibling’s arrival
  • A rough night of sleep (sleeplessness, overnight storms, etc.)

  1. Use Technology as A Resource

Sometimes communicating can be very difficult in person, especially when you’re in a hurry at drop-off or pick-up, so we encourage you to utilize other ways to communicate with your child’s daycare teacher. One of our favorite communication tools is our Tadpoles app! The Tadpoles app is an excellent place for preschool teachers to connect with parents daily when it comes to progress in learning areas and keeping you up to date on in-class activities.

For updates that might be a little easier in writing but not suitable for the app, we suggest talking with your child’s daycare teacher to determine what other forms of technology you can utilize for day-to-day communication. For instance, if significant adjustments are happening at home that will likely affect your child’s behavior or mood, let your childcare provider or preschool teacher know via email or text, depending on what mode of communication they prefer.
