Picture it: you’re planning a perfect day out with your little ones: a picnic, a walk in the park, and a visit to everyone’s favorite playground. You gather up your bunch only to realize it’s raining. Don’t worry! As a Goodrich daycare, we have the inside scoop on all the best rainy-day activities in the area.
Whether you want an educational day out with family or you just need your kids to get their wiggles out, Goodrich has a plethora of options, even when the weather is less than cooperative.
Favorite Home Activities for Rainy Days
Even if the weather is too bad to go out, there are tons of home activities that can get your kids up and thinking. For days when you just can’t fathom leaving the house, consider creating a new sweet treat with your little ones. Baking is a surprisingly educational activity for kids of all ages that supports a myriad of learning objectives.
Some of our favorite things that can be taught with baking are:
- Fractions
- Hand-eye coordination
- Changes in matter
School-aged kids can learn all about halves and fourths when measuring various ingredients and can practice their basic and more complicated math skills. Preschoolers can practice their hand-eye coordination when measuring and dumping ingredients into bowls.
You might not think it at first, but baking is also a surprising science experiment. Your kids can understand the differences between solid butter and melted butter, how it interacts with different sugars, and more. Everyone wins with baking: you get to spend time with the kids, they learn valuable skills, and everyone gets a yummy treat at the end.
Places in Goodrich for Indoor Fun
Even though there is lots of indoor fun to be had, sometimes you tire of your normal toddler games and just have to get out of the house. Fortunately, Goodrich is extremely family-friendly, with activities for kids and adults of all ages.
Genesee County Library System
Here in Goodrich, we are fortunate to have an exciting and robust public library system that offers family fun all year long, rain or shine. Best of all, it’s all completely free to Genesee County residents. It’s a treasure trove of fun, no matter what your family is typically into.
One of the most classic library activities is, of course, Story Time. There are Story Times for everyone, from infants to older kids. Children’s librarians conduct Story Time, which is complete with lots of other activities, like singing and dancing, to keep kids engaged throughout.
Another exciting class opportunity at the library is Mini Yogi and Me. This is a class tailored to parents and kids who love yoga. Along with stories and games, this parent-and-me class offers physical activity while also working on mindfulness and breathing, which is perfect for helping your little one regulate emotions.
Rainy Days Might Be Your New Favorite
Even though the rain can seem like a bit of a bummer, it’s actually an exciting opportunity to engage with your kids in brand-new ways. From baking and coloring to visiting all the best libraries and museums, don’t be surprised if rainy days suddenly become your favorite.
