As a parent, we’ve all heard that creating and implementing a routine for our kids is so important. However, we know that routines aren’t always easy to implement and that no two routines are alike. So, what’s the secret to creating a routine that works for you and your family? While we may not have all the answers, we swear by these tips that have helped us out.
5 Tips for Creating a Daily Routine for Kids
- Include them
- Establish limits
- Make a list
- Prep
- Stick to it!
How to Include Your Kids in the Daily Routine
Including your child in the routine helps get them on board. While change is great for kids, many don’t love it because the fear of something unknown is daunting. By introducing what the routine will look like before you implement it and familiarizing your kid with the changes ahead, they will be more likely to embrace their new routine.
Start by talking to them about the upcoming changes to their routine and any expectations of things you may have for them. You can even practice a few times with them to start, which will add a level of confidence and comfortability for your child.
Why You Should Set Limits for Each Task
Setting limits may not work for every child, but we swear they work. Kids tend to veer off track, get distracted, and before you know it, the entire routine has gone out the window for the day. If you are expecting your child to be able to execute their routine seamlessly, it’s important to set limits on how much time they should spend on each task.
You can even purchase a timer to set as they start the next task. By setting limits for each task, you are ensuring your kids will be able to accomplish their tasks before the time needed to leave or before bedtime.
How to Make a Checklist Your Kids Will Follow
A checklist with a lot of words or tasks is a big no-no, as kids love visuals and something they can easily follow. Consider adding pictures and a checkbox for every task for your younger kiddos and some fun emojis and a checkbox for your older ones. You can even laminate it so they can use a dry-erase marker to check off each task as they complete it. Don’t forget that implementing a routine does take patience and time.
Each child is different, and it may take some time to realize where their biggest strengths are. Start small with your checklist – no more than a few tasks. As your child masters those, you can work to add one more at a time. This will ensure success and prevent frustration on both sides.
Prep What You Can the Night Before
No matter your child’s age, we always recommend prepping the night before. If the morning has been full of meltdowns, removing as many barriers as possible will provide the best possible outcome. If you are looking to get some time back in your morning, prep what you can, too.
Start making lunches the night before while your child picks out their clothes and makes sure their bag is packed. Set out anything they may need help reaching and let them help pick out parts of their outfit. They will be excited to get dressed in the morning, and you will have a few extra minutes to drink your coffee before it gets cold!
Why It’s Important to Stay Consistent and Share the Routine with Others
A successful routine means getting everyone on board. The more people encouraging your kiddo along the way, the easier it will be for them to get excited. For example, if your child goes to school, let the teachers know that your child has started getting their shoes on by themselves and that you’d love for them to keep that consistency at school. The more people cheering your kiddo on, the sooner they’ll master each task.
And that’s it! Just remember that one routine doesn’t fit all. You may have to tweak a few things to ensure it works for your family. Also, don’t forget that life happens and not every day will be perfect – so give yourself grace. But before you know it, the whole family will be looking forward to the morning and night with everyone embracing the new routine!
